The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nadhim Zahawi, has been sending threatening letters to people investigating his tax affairs. The letters are designed to intimidate & say they're confidential and can't be published. One was sent to me. I am publishing it.

Everyone is talking about the £3.7m of tax that Nadhim Zahawi "carelessly" failed to pay. Perhaps not enough people are talking about the cover-up.

Worse than careless? The Zahawi cover-up.

Quick note to people reporting on Zahawi. If he did fail to pay £3.7m capital gains tax, that likely means he failed to report receiving ***£27m***. He presumably claimed this was merely “careless” (and so not tax fraud). How plausible is that?

So @TimesRadio just asked me if I'm looking at the tax affairs of any other MPs. The answer is yes...

I have a new definition of "chutzpah" - lying to the press, threatening them with libel action, and then complaining that their headlines were mean.

I'm grateful to the Prime Minister for referring Mr Zahawi's actions to Sir Laurie Magnus. I have asked him to confirm that Sir Laurie's remit will not be limited to tax, but will also cover the conflict of interest and the manner in which Mr Zahawi responded to the allegations.

The Post Office's compensation scheme is designed to minimise payouts. One postmaster received £15.75. That isn't a typo. I count nine ways the Post Office's HSS compensation scheme is rigged:

There’s a very lengthy backstory to Nadhim Zahawi’s HMRC settlement, and lots of people have been asking me to summarise it. Here goes:
wi's tax affairs were fully up to date and in the UK. He has aid that he will any questions from s he always has done. —Spokesperson

New development. Guardian reporting Zahawi paid the tax plus interest, plus a 30% penalty - over £5m. 30% is at the lower end of what I'd expect. But the obvious point: people whose taxes are "fully up to date" don't pay 30% penalties to HMRC.

Exclusive report: a series of errors by HMRC let Paul Baxendale-Walker, probably the UK's most notorious tax avoidance scheme promoter, escape a £14m penalty He's threatening to prosecute me for harassment, sue me for libel *and* sue me for £500,000 if I report this. Here goes:

More questions. If Zahawi just made an innocent mistake and did his civic duty in cleaning it up… why did he threaten to sue people reporting on it? And try to keep those threats secret?
