    Our findings suggest that we should be paying special attention to conflicts fought by male-dominant actors, especially if there is a marked difference in gender norms compared to their opponents. Future research should explore which policies can prevent sexual violence in war.

    We propose a novel Male Dominance Index at the ethnicity level to measure gender norms. The index is based on ten ethnic characteristics that relate to notions of gender (in)equality. There is large within-country variation in male dominance:

    Main findings: 1⃣ More male dominant actors are more likely to perpetrate sexual violence. 2⃣ Sexual violence is the result of a cultural clash: sexual violence increases when the perpetrator is more male dominant than the victim.
