    Beautiful, democratically-controlled, permanently affordable housing for all isn’t a pipe dream: it’s social housing, and I’m fighting to bring it NY. We can have housing that allows people to live with dignity and supports our climate goals. But we have to organize for it.

    🧵Every month or so, I get a call from someone wanting to know what I’m going to do about crime. Often what is being talked about is homelessness. Homelessness is a crime committed by our society, not by people who do not have a house.

    One of the biggest problems in the U.S. is we rarely include white collar crime in our “tough on crime” rhetoric, but it is in fact white collar crime that is destroying our country.

    I just returned from Rikers Island where a group of elected officials exercised our legal right to inspect correctional facilities. What I witnessed was a humanitarian crisis. A horror house of abuse and neglect. I'll share more soon but for now my message is simple: decarcerate.

    Mahmoud Khalil is a legal resident, with an American citizen wife and infant. To be deported—much less to a country he has no connection to—for nonviolent protest against a genocide isn’t just un-American, it’s unhinged.

    The detention of Mahmoud Khalil—a green card holder and @Columbia grad student—is horrific. Protesting genocide isn't a crime, and you can't detain someone and revoke their legal status because you don't like their speech. That's not my opinion, it's central to the rule of law.

    A reporter from Paris just interviewed me, and asked, “in a Rikers, did you feel ashamed?” I found myself suddenly on the verge of tears. Finally I had clarity on how I feel. I am ashamed. We are collectively detached from the suffering of our most vulnerable, intentionally.

    The Times Union is the paper of record in Albany. The paper's editorial board had a front row seat to observe Cuomo's leadership over 10.5 years. When they tell us not to rank him, we should believe them.

    I am devastated to share that my dear friend Ryan Carson, who worked for NYPIRG and created the advocacy organization “No OD NY”, was murdered last night. I met Ryan many years ago through the DIY punk scene and he has been a trusted friend in Albany and at home. I miss him.

    As Mayor, Bloomberg cut funding for HIV prevention at a time when new infections were increasing among young men of color. He also hosted the 2004 RNC when Bush was running for re-election on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

    Oil and fracked gas lobbyists are taking advantage of the Ukraine crisis, sending memos to legislators demanding more domestic fossil fuel production. This is dead wrong. We're witnessing a war driven by the politics of fossil fuels. We need renewable energy, everywhere, now.
