    Angelina Fanny Hesse suggested to her scientist husband, Walther Hesse, that agar was preferential to gelatin for culturing microorganisms, as it maintains gel properties at warm temperatures. This led Koch to culture M. tuberculosis using agar, without crediting her. #IWD2019

    Celebrating the work of Carl Woese, American #microbiologist and biophysicist who died #OnThisDay in 2012. In 1977 he defined a new domain of life, the #Archaea, using phylogenetic taxonomy of 16S ribosomal RNA, a technique he pioneered that revolutionized microbiology 🦠

    Happy #InternationalMicroorganismDay! #OnThisDay in 1683, the father of microbiology Antoni van leeuwenhoek wrote to the Royal Society about his teeth being the home to "many very little animalcules" 🦠🔬 These were some of the first observations of living microbes! @IntMicroDay
