Nex Benedict should still be alive. Nex deserved not only a safe and nurturing environment to learn, but an environment that actively disrupted anti-2STGNC+ rhetoric and worked to ensure that vulnerable students were safe. Read more, here: freedomoklahoma.org/news/nex-bened…

When we issued our statement yesterday, we felt it important to uplift Nex's Indigenous identity, given the disproportionate harm Two Spirit & Indigiqueer people face and the importance of tribal sovereignty with regard to jurisdiction in the face of alleged criminal acts.
Text on white background with a Freedom Oklahoma logo "We know that our broader 2SLGBTQ+ community is grieving the loss of Nex Benedict. When we issued our statement yesterday, we felt it especially important to uplift Nex's Indigenous identity, given the disproportionate harm Two Spirit and Indigiqueer people face and the importance of tribal sovereignty with regard to jurisdiction in the face of alleged criminal acts. We have learned in the time since our statement that Nex's tribal affiliation was misidentified to us, and that Nex is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, not the Cherokee Nation. We are grateful to the folks who helped us make this clarification, and grateful to Chief Chuck Hoskin and the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma for their statement supporting Nex's grieving community and the effort to find answers. We know despite our intentions, misidentifying Nex's tribal affiliation caused harm, and for that we apologize."

Today, the OK House of Representatives voted to censure Rep Mauree Turner and remove them from their Committee Assignments. We don’t have words to convey our anger at what those in power in the Oklahoma House did today to Representative Turner and our entire 2STGNC+ community.
In a party-line vote of 81-19, Republicans sought to make an example out of Rep. Turner, the first and only publicly nonbinary state lawmaker in Oklahoma history. theblackwallsttimes.com/2023/03/07/okl…

We're heartbroken that folks in power can see the deadly results of their rhetoric, and still choose to speak that hate into the world.
Sen. Tom Woods on Friday called the LGBTQ+ community “filth” while answering questions during a public forum ow.ly/xJxE50QHm8V.

Hey @HealthyOklahoma why is Logan Co Health Department turning away a trans woman trying to get a vaccine and telling us to take it up with the state?

On Monday, Governor Stitt issued an executive order furthering his attacks on Two Spirit, intersex, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, & gender diverse people in Oklahoma. At Freedom Oklahoma, we stand firm in our commitment to push back on these attacks, every step of the way.

Some of you may have begun to see news and videos from the OK Capitol that show a trans person being slammed to the ground by a trooper and arrested after an emotional day in which the legislature directly attacked their ability to survive in this state.

This month, the OKC City Council will vote whether or not to reestablish a Human Rights Commission. Back in 1996, the Council was abolished because municipal leaders did not want to extend even the possibility of protections to queer Oklahomans.

Victory! HB 1888 is dead! You all took action & the Legislature had no choice but to listen! Thank you to the Legislators who worked to protect their LGBTQ2S+ constituents & to each of you who took action on behalf of yourselves, loved ones, & every single LGBTQ2S+ Oklahoman!

In response to the press release from the Oklahoma State Department of Education announcing a partnership with PragerU, an entity that notes it is not an academic institution, we had the following to say: We need investments in public education, not indoctrination. #oklaed
white background with text "Listen, we could write another press release to say that being second behind Florida to hop on an education trend in this current landscape is bad. And that we worry for students, educators, families, and communities about the impact of further forcing indoctrination based in extremist politics in lieu of fact-based, historically accurate education content. But we figured you probably know where we stand on the matter. So, instead, here's our reminder that Oklahomans deserve better than the folks with the most power on their access to information advancing personal political agendas at the expense of the safety, well being, and education of our youth. We need investments in public education, not indoctrination." There are two circles decorating the image, one with a Freedom Oklahoma logo at its center.
