As an IMG, I wish someone had told me these things when applying for residency: 1. Avoid J1 visa if possible, even if seeking fellowshps. It hurts you at the end when looking for J1 waiver. Imagine going through 6+ years training and not getting a job.

From J1 to GC, my journey: 1. For residency, applied to ~200 programs, received 17 interviews of which ~20% were H1b (mostly community or affiliated programs, 1 univ). Chose J1 as I was told this is better for fellowships.

In some good news, our green card was approved! Grateful for all the support 🙏. The harrowing days of yearly visa renewals, denials (twice), waiver jobs and a constant reminder of inferiority despite your potential are hopefully behind us! The one true #IndependenceDay for me!

Today I #graduate from @CedarsSinai as a heart failure #cardiologist. The amazing journey from Mumbai to Los Angeles draws to a close. Great memories and people on the way. Onwards to the University of Kentucky as an assistant professor in advanced heart failure. #Fruition

I am now the Director of Cardiac Amyloidosis @GillKentucky! Honored and humbled. Onwards and upwards! Big plans for the program are upcoming, including a recently awarded $20k competitive education grant from @pfizer to spread the word about amyloidosis in Kentucky.

As I see the tweets from IMGs applying for residency this year, I reflect on my application 10 years ago. The accomplishments of the applicants has gone up tremendously but also the barrier to entry. Their CVs are way fuller than mine to date! I hope they get their dream job..

    2. Be realistic and save money while applying for programs. Ivy league and first tier universities almost never accept IMGs, so don't bother applying to those.

    4. During residency look for opportunities to do away electives. I did mine at NIH which accepts one resident each month in most of its depts. These become good topics of discussion during future interviews.

    6. Make your own opportunities if there "aren't any". Had an incomplete study idea as a 2nd year resident while nothing else was available. Went with it, learnt statistics, got rejected by many journals but I'm still proud of it! researchgate.net/profile/Gauran…
