Are Large Language Models good at modeling how humans process language? A new Forum piece in @TrendsCognSci is a reminder that the question itself has different interpretations, each with its own consequences. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

When I write a review, I imagine the author is a junior grad student and this is their first paper. So I focus on being helpful: not just pointing out issues, but also suggesting how they could be fixed. Helping each other become better scientists is part of our job.

When we "know the meaning" of a word, what is it that we know? For example, what does knowing the words "dolphin" and "tiger" entail? A thread on our recent paper out in @NatureHumBehav. (link to short video talk at the end) 1/21

Grad school applicants: there are many more *outstanding* students than programs can admit. More often than not, not getting an offer says more about limited resources, noise, and perceived fit than it does about your achievements & great potential. #phdchat

For years I feared psychiatric meds would change who I was. @ev_fedorenko convinced me to try. They did change me: after over a decade, I no longer think abt suicide every few days—can't even imagine it. Please find meds that work for you. Trial & error is a bitch, but worth it.

Statisticians please tell me that I am wrong: this is from a paper just out in Nature. Is this OK? Am I hallucinating examples from stats 101 about misinterpreting correlations that look just like this? #statschat

When I read a paper my H0 is “someone worked really hard w/ honest effort”. Every author has blindspots, so my goal is to make the paper even clearer, more sound, more reproducible. I believe one can have a sharp, critical mind AND be a benevolent educator, not a hunter.

I start reading a scientific paper by attempting to reject H0a: "the whole thing is fraudulent". When I find reasonable evidence that it isn't, then I move on to H0b: "there are major errors in the analyses". If I reject both of those, then I relax a bit. Anyone else do this?

Accidental illusion by yours truly. Some people initially see this slice of lemon tart as short and wide (almost a quarter of a circle), but it's actually tall and thin (huge layer or meringue).
