As we're staring down placing deposits for Mia's 2026 therapy intensives, and because a leak in our basement has expedited our plans to make that space accessible and safe for her wheelchair use, I'm leaving this here for anyone who may feel led to donate. We're so grateful for

I have some difficult news to share about our sweet baby. Mia has been diagnosed with a severe form of lissencephaly, a terminal brain malformation characterized by a smooth appearance rather than the usual folds and grooves. (1/5)

We are mourning all that we dreamed would be while still finding purpose and joy in the reality of what is. At this point, our priority is to provide Mia with the best possible care, therapies, and interventions to maximize her potential and improve her quality of life. (5/5)

Here’s what I haven’t really seen in the wake of the Alabama ruling. From those who agree with the reasoning, I haven’t seen an immediate, responsive desire to adopt what will inevitably be an overwhelming number of embryos that have chromosomal abnormalities. Because now in

9 months old. Not too long ago, doctors would tell parents that their child with lissencephaly wouldn't live past the age of two. The longer we have with this sweet girl, the more devastating that cutoff seems. I'm so grateful for medical advancements that buy us more time.

I fear feeling alone in the years to come as the well of empathy naturally runs dry, and I grieve the pain that lies ahead for Mia. But I'm grateful for the care we've already received, and I choose to believe that Mia will continue to be loved, thought of, and prayed for. (4/5)

Today was Mia's first day back at daycare since her surgery. When I picked her up, her teachers said that she was so much more alert and happy than they've seen her all year-- and that today was the first time she had ever interacted with other babies in the room 🥹🐨💜

I'm terribly sad to inform you that it turns out I have birthed an extrovert. This baby has ✨come alive✨ with each family gathering. We are hearing new sounds, she is showing off new moves, and she is charming all the folks in eastern Tennessee. Please respect our privacy

I've been putting off a call that I am determined to make today. Because both Adam and I carry the genetic mutation that caused Mia's lissencephaly, if we were to conceive naturally, there's a 25% chance we would have another baby with this terminal illness. This means that if

🎉 Here is the short version of the very, very, very good news: After what was supposed to be a 12-week process and has now been over 8 months, Mia was finally approved for Medicaid 😭🥂🙌 It's no exaggeration to say this is 100% life-changing for us.

It's a rough week over here. Mia's on the most aggressive treatment available for her type of seizures, and the ACTH injections are starting to take a toll. She's sedated, exhausted, hangry, and sad 🥺
