To embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people, southern White Citizens Councils started their so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides," giving Black people one-way tickets to northern cities with false promises of jobs, housing, and better lives. jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/a…
Reverse Freedom Ride: Negro Family On Way Here
A Negro couple and their eight children were placed on a Trenton-bound bus in Shreveport, La., this morning by the White Citizens' Council of Louisiana.
The family of Alan Gilmore - the first "reverse Freedom Riders" to this city - were scheduled to arrive at the Perry Street bus terminal here at 4:20 a.m. on Sunday. The children range in age from eight months to 10 years.
Charles Barnett, president of the White Citizens' Council, said the Gilmore family would 'look up Nicholas Katzenbach in Trenton.'
He apparently referred to Nicholas deBelleville Katzenbach, deputy U.S. Attorny General. Katzenbach was in charge of the marshalls on the University of Mississippi campus when James Meredith enrolled there last fall....

    Replying to @JFKLibraryFdn
The Kennedy White House received mail from leaders in the targeted states, asking the federal government to intervene in the “cruel merciless hoax” and “their traffic in human lives and misery.” jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/a…
Effort by segregationists to relocate certain citizens of Southern cities is a cruel merciless hoax. Massachusetts has always been a haven for the oppressed but conditions are such that employment opportunities are limited. I suggest Executive Order or legislation whereby federal government would assume costs, if these unfortunate people become public charges, and then empower the Attorney General to bring an action to make the person or persons responsible for this cruelty personally liable for the costs incurred by the government. If they pay the costs of their traffic in human lives and misery their attitude will no doubt change.
John M. Arruda Mayor of Fall River Mass.

President Kennedy’s call for public service, courage, innovation, and inclusion inspired a generation to transform the country. Fifty-seven years after his assassination, this legacy continues to provide inspiration to us in the 21st century.

.@SpeakerPelosi is the 2019 #ProfileInCourage Award honoree! She put the national interest above her party's interest to expand access to health care and, against a wave of political attacks, led the effort to retake the majority & elect the most diverse Congress in U.S. history.

60 years ago today on June 11, 1963, President Kennedy addressed the nation on civil rights. He defined the civil rights crisis as moral, as well as constitutional and legal, and announced that he would submit civil rights legislation to Congress. #JFK60 jfklibrary.org/learn/about-jf…

Happy #Nowruz! Nowruz celebrates the arrival of spring and marks the Iranian or Persian New Year. It has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years. In 1962, the Shah and Empress of Iran visited the US, attending a dinner in their honor at the White House.
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and his wife, the Empress Farah Pahlavi, arrive at the White House for a dinner in their honor. President and Mrs. Kennedy welcome them on the North Portico of the White House, and photographers document the moment in the background.

All of us at the JFK Library and Foundation are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ethel Kennedy. Years ago, I had the privilege of working with Mrs. Kennedy at the institution she dedicated much of her life to, the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.
