As of next week, I will be starting at the Pentagon at the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy on the Japan Desk. So excited to join this fantastic team of alliance managers at this crucial time. Also looking forward to working again w/ colleagues from INDOPACOM!

Useful map. We have to prepare for simultaneous and coordinated attacks. South Korea should laser focus on its own self defense. U.S. forces must focus on the PLA, whether around Taiwan or in and around South Korea.

Probably the most unequivocal statement from ROK gov, and certainly from a U.S.-Japan-ROK joint statement, on condemning Chinese coercive actions in the SCS and increasing military pressure on Taiwan. 1/4 Worth quoting at length:

🧵One aspect of U.S. relative decline I think deserves more attention is that it’s not just taking place against the back drop of the rise of China. It’s also the shrinking (but still wide) gap between U.S. capabilities and the capabilities of our allies and partners.

For many of us younger Japan watchers in the US, Abe-san was THE Prime Minister. His transformational time in office likely inspired many in both countries to pursue a career in strengthening the Alliance and building upon the deep people-to-people connections it is founded on.
