Oh Google. $23.7B in profit on $80.5B in revenue in Q1. Up 15% YoY. And also doing unceremonious and poorly thought out lay-offs. Perhaps take a lesson from @OpenAI and realize you’re nothing without your people?

For those not following tech/business news: there was another round of lay-offs at Google. I am still here, Firebase is still here, but I am beyond sad about the amount of talent that was let go (again), the way it was done (again), and the reasons given for it (again).

There was a Chinese clone of @Firebase called WildDog. They copied us right down to our edge server URLs. Eg we’d serve traffic from “nss1-dal.firebase.io” (namespace server 1 in Dallas on our colocated hardware). They of course didn’t know that, but blindly copied it.

2000s: "Now, with EC2, you can do with a team of 20 what used to take 40" 2010s: "Now, with Firebase, you can do with a team of 5, what used to take 20" 2020s: "Now, with AI, you can do it all yourself." Single-person products will be the end-state.
