We 13C field labeled annual grass plots for a week in spring ‘18. Two yrs later, 23% of that C pulse was still in the soil—mostly in mineral fraction. Exudates sorbed to the HF v quickly & NMR shows type of OM evolved w time. Raises lots of ?s! ... sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Have you ever wondered about how microbes die? We review how microbiome ecology shapes soil #biogeochemistry--both ecophysiology of the living and necromass links to persistent #soil carbon. Congrats to @NoahSokol & the LLNL Soil Microbiome team rdcu.be/cHVtM

Thinking of the postdocs and early career scientists in my group and around the country. For them, this means a chance for a visa, a green card & the basic ability to purse their career dreams.

I'm a soil ecologist, studying how plant roots and microbes conspire to take carbon out of the air and stuff it in the ground. And i love to bake.... Sometimes i get to mix science with cake!

Stable Isotope Probing tells which microbes are active, what substrate they use, who's a symbiont, predator & more...but its tedious in the lab. We developed a semi-automated approach = 1/6th hands on labor & increased reproducibility. Read more here rdcu.be/c0sK3
