A highlight of this week was meeting with the @DogsTrust in Stormont -we went for a walk, talked about animal welfare & the important work they do. They have 22 dogs looking for forever homes right now, like my new bestie Vera who stole my heart 🥰 dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/dogs?…

The petition of concern was designed to protect minorities, not weaponise politics. When it’s abused to block progress, democracy suffers. @allianceparty refuses to play those games. We’re focused on evidence, values & what actually works for NI ⤵️

It’s Anna Lo’s birthday today& I’ve been thinking about her so much the last little while. What she would have made of all of this & how she would be championing what was right. Her deeply human way of doing politics was always important, but feels especially urgent right now 💛

Running from the debate & dismissing the established evidence that criminalising children increases reoffending, to maintain a bankrupt ideology that punishes children for the accident of their birth & removes any chance at a future. A special kind of politics even for this place

Criminal age of responsibility will stay at 10years despite all the evidence, experts & childrens rights organisations saying it is too low. Shame on the UUP & the DUP who have signed the petition of concern to kill this debate. An abuse of democracy & pathetic on every level.

Wreckers make the headlines, the people make the place - & today the people of Belfast really showed up. I keep thinking of Anna Lo, what she would have thought of all of this. One thing I know for sure is she would have loved the city gathering to reaffirm our common humanity 💛

I’ve been asked what I have been doing in last few days so update below. Focus is on supporting people who need it right now - it’s the 3rd year of this & clear there is a need for a actionable plan for coordinating responses, esp when people displaced, transport stopped etc
On Wednesday I spent time with businesses impacted, people evacuated, neighbours who were scared and media who wanted to know what was going on & evening spent liaising with people on the so-called address hit list, all afraid they would lose their homes or come to harm. Yesterday I spent some time with the volunteers who are keeping displaced families off the street & saw how they are doing this with no help from statutory agencies or funding. Checked in with PSNI, people who had been in touch afraid & speaking to agencies who should be coordinating support. Today I'm attending community meetings & carrying on with casework. The silver lining - as is always the case in NI - are the kind people.
So many of them. The ones who show up, offer lifts, bring food, donate, drop a note in a neighbour's door to see if they're ok - they don't make the headlines like those wrecking the place - but they are the ones who make the place. Grateful for everyone who has been doing their bit x

A 🧵on the "open border" (aka Common Travel Area), with one fundamental point - closing the border between NI and Ireland is not a realistic possibility. @GRobinsonDUP @JimAllister @JonBurrowsMLA @moneillsf @naomi_long @ClaireHanna @JP_Biz @hilarybennmp (1/5)

Politicians calling for “action” but can’t define what that action is are major red flags 🚩

There’s no “back door” asylum loophole. The process is the same regardless of route & there’s no shortcut to refugee status. Post-Brexit, the UK also lost EU return provisions that previously applied. So DUP “close the border” narrative is a good soundbyte - but not a solution.
