I run an RCT on occupational safety & health (OSH) committees, the key worker voice institution for workplace health & safety. They have small, positive effects on OSH, with no evidence they are costly in terms of wages, employment, or labor productivity econometricsociety.org/publications/e…

It has been very saddening but not altogether surprising to follow #econtwitter’s current #metoo moment. A short 🧵 based on my experience conducting research related to reporting of (sexual) harassment.

Teaser alert: Silence does != no problems. We find that providing plausible deniability about reporting through exogenous garbling increases reporting of workplace harassment by 46-288%, with a larger increase for more sensitive types of harassment.

Theory predicts that providing plausible deniability through garbling can increase reporting of sensitive info. We evaluate this in a real-world setting & find large effects on workers' reporting of harassment. We also consider other ways to increase reporting-more in the paper!

Eradicating sexual harassment from econ requires taking systematic approaches to (1) increase the benefits by having material actions be taken against perpetrators and (2) design reporting systems that reduce reputation/retaliation cost (& are robust to strategic misreporting).

From studying people’s reporting decisions (and being a woman in the field), my sense is that people rarely come forward because the costs are enormous relative to the benefits. E.G., see @abicadams @EmilyNix100 @ningzhang0927 and @KristiinaHuttu2's important work on the costs.
