The war in Ukraine is not a quarrel in a faraway country between people of whom we know nothing. We know exactly who started it and that his aggression is directed as much against Ukraine as against the US and its allies. I wrote a whole book about it:

Americans used to ask me during my time in Moscow: "What's wrong with those Russians, why don't they protest?" Now I'm in Kyiv and Ukrainians keep asking me: "What's wrong with Americans, why don't they protest?"

Your bus isn’t late, it’s just taking part in Moscow’s absurd Parade of City Services Vehicles.

Retired Russian general publishes open letter to Putin demanding he resign because unprovoked invasion of Ukraine will have tens of thousands of casualties, turn Russia into international pariah, threaten its very statehood. ooc.su/news/obrashhen…

Ukrainians laugh bitterly describing the current situation: 450 million-strong Europe depends on military backing of 340 million-strong US, which bows to 140 million-strong Russia, which is being held in check by 40 million-strong Ukraine.

For third consecutive day, Muscovites protest for free and fair city council elections. “Every day!” they chant. “Russia without Putin!”

In Berlin today, thousands demonstrated for the right not to wear a mask; in Minsk, thousands demonstrated for the right to free and fair elections. Half of Europe has forgotten what liberty means, the other half is still fighting for it.

Recently I returned from my second trip to Ukraine since May. I spoke to dozens of officials, soldiers, opposition figures, foreign diplomats, analysts, civil society activists—and ordinary Ukrainians who are bearing the brunt of Russia’s invasion. Here are some impressions.

I covered 2008 Russia-Georgia War. First potshots and shelling from separatist region whose residents Putin had given Russian passports, then baseless Kremlin claims of "genocide" and massive invasion by Russian troops who had just finished exercises. Not exactly a new playbook.

I lived in Russia for 8 years before 2014. People spoke fondly about Crimea, but never did I hear anyone say they wanted it "back." Donbas was synonymous with rust belt poverty, nobody even wanted to visit. Kherson, Zaporizhzhia? Most Russians probably still can't find on a map.

Czechs cheering @ZelenskyyUa on Prague's Wenceslas Square is deeply symbolic. It was here, in the 1989 Velvet Revolution, that Czechoslovakia threw off the Soviet yoke—traumatizing a KGB officer in nearby Dresden named Vladimir Putin.

From what I'm hearing, Elon Musk is not simply expressing his own view but transmitting a concrete proposal—wrapped in a threat—from Putin himself.

Scoop: German arms maker Rheinmetall has refurbished 16 Marder infantry fighting vehicles for Ukraine, is working on 14 more and could restore an additional 70. Problem: German government is withholding permission to deliver, citing agreement with allies. tagesschau.de/inland/rheinme…
