Dredged from the River Cam in the 1920s this grey ware beaker may date to the Bronze Age. As it might have held ale or beer it's the perfect choice to mark the start of #Oktoberfest!

This beautiful neolithic handaxe was found in Histon, near Cambridge. It's made out of jadeite that comes from high in the Italian alps. It's perfectly smooth so we can tell it was never used as a tool. It may have been a symbol of power or status #prehistory#heritageMW
#FridayFavourites - this ivory netsuke of a baby sparrow (fukura-suzume) is as exquisitely carved as it is adorable.
Dating to the 17th century or later, the signature of the artist on this netsuke reads either "Seisei" or "Masakiyo".

Happy birthday to #trowelblazer Dorothy Garrod, born #OnThisDay in 1892 💪
Garrod conducted pioneering digs including at Mount Carmel, and went on to become the first female professor at Cambridge (or indeed to hold any Oxbridge chair).
Things you find in the archives: ‘Dear Clark, I am sending by train today your share of the Stonehenge objects and a damned poor lot too. Sorry but there it is. Can’t do any better. You can chuck a big shovel at me...’ 1/2
