    Today, an Air India plane will land in Male’ with 100,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine - a gift from India. For 🇲🇻 it’s the beginning of the end of this terrible virus. During tsunami, ‘88 coup, water crisis or corona 🦠, 🇮🇳 has been our first responder and dependable friend.

    As Indian polls close, congratulations are in order for @narendramodi and the BJP. I am sure the Maldives people and Govt will be delighted to continue their close cooperation with the PM and the BJP-led Govt.

    The super low cost development assistance announced by @DrSJaishankar today is exactly what Maldives needs. Genuine help from a friend, to help us build critical infrastructure. Rather than eye-wateringly expensive commercial loans that leaves the nation mired in debt. @PMOIndia

    What appalling language by Maldives Government official @shiuna_m towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity. @MMuizzu gov must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect gov policy.

    On behalf of Maldivian people we humbly request: 1. India to send envoy, backed by its military, to release judges & pol. detainees inc. Prez. Gayoom. We request a physical presence. 2. The US to stop all financial transactions of Maldives regime leaders going through US banks.

    Over the next 14 days, Maldives Treasury must pay over $15m to Chinese banks. These banks have not, thus far, given any concessions for these loans. These repayments represent over 50% of government income over next 14 days. After Covid, Maldives needs breathing space. 💰💰💰 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Had the pleasure of speaking today with Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi, and yesterday with External Affairs Minister @SushmaSwaraj. I assured them we will use our Majlis majority responsibly: implement manifesto pledges; consolidate democracy; ensure Indian Ocean stability.
