A statistic to stop you in your tracks: "A 20-year-old today has a better chance of having a living grandmother than a 20-year-old in 1900 had of having a living mother" – @MerrynSW writing in today's FT

Only c.8% of Shell's sales are from the UK and most of that £32 billion profit was earned overseas. Two years ago Shell made NO operating profits. Same in 2015. If our policy is "take money off any UK companies that have a good year" then we will indeed have fun staying poor.

Shell have announced record profits of £32 billion, a rate of £90 million profit every day in 2022. Meanwhile, we are getting absolutely fleeced by energy companies and the government is doing fuck all about it. They are taking the piss out of us. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-644891…

They had it on CCTV!?! That's a disgrace it wasn't pursued. No doubt it wasn't the first or last time he'd done this. I'm sorry to hear it Laura.

There's too much panic and gloom out there. This is very bad, but it's not the end of the world. It's not even the end of the equity market. A message to my readers, and anyone else who needs it.

We don't need to tax people on six-figure salaries at much higher rates. We need many more people on six-figure salaries.

The future is here: the UK economy is 5.5% smaller due to Brexit. This is why we have Austerity 2.0 and tax rises, and it's why there's no extra money for the NHS. From now let's ignore Brexiteers on economic issues like we ignore flat Earthers.

My latest update estimates Brexit reduced Britain's GDP by 5.5 per cent by the second quarter of 2022. My model avoids the cherry-picking of data, and performs better than its critics’ methods.
