    let's pause to hit like for all the tow truck drivers, law enforcement personnel, ambulance drivers and emergency crews working their &**)^ off today. Remember, so they could be on duty today, they didn't get to travel this holiday weekend. LIKE SPIKE PLEASE

    as of 7 a.m., as you can see, very little improvement in road conditions over the few hours. There is a thick layer of ice under the snow, and it's well beyond the effective temps of pre-treat. We've got to plow and get salt down on every lane mile of highway. We need until noon.

    The city of Elwood is sounding the sirens at this time for evacuation of the city. The water level has reached 30.13 feet and still rising 2 tenths of an inch an hour. Once evacuation is complete KDOT will close the US-36 ramps going into the city to keep people from returning.

    Another snow plow has been hit on the on-ramp at I-70 west and K-99 exit and is currently out of service. Please please give our snow plows plenty of room. @TopekaMetroKDOT

    CLOSURE UPDATE: I-70 both directions closed between Manhattan exit and I-470 exit at Topeka for conditions. Expected re-open time not known.

    Chance of dying unbelted in a crash at highway speeds almost guaranteed, chance of dying belted far less. Never a 100% guarantee, but why would you risk leaving behind grieving family and friends when it costs exactly nothing to take a proven preventative measure. Prove me wrong.

    as of 6 a.m. all roads in NE Kansas completely covered. No closures. Do not be fooled, there's a layer of ice below the snow. Recommend not trying to travel until noon. If you must travel, allow A LOT of extra time and increase those following distances A LOT.

    UPDATE - I-70 between Manhattan and Topeka IS NOW OPEN to traffic. Continue to use extra caution while traveling and check Kandrive.org for road condition information.
