Beautiful to be at the Olympic Stadium in Paris. Forty years on from watching the Los Angeles Games at home in childlike wonder. Twenty years on from being in Athens to watch Kelly Holmes in that golden summer. I’m now much older, only a bit wiser and still besotted with sport.

All this Gareth Southgate love - well deserved for a great bloke - only says to me how much we’re crying out for basic decency in our leading public figures. We’re tired of braggarts and buffoons and Gareth is helping to fill the void.

Wow, here’s Neil Kinnock on George Galloway after hearing Galloway lost his Rochdale seat to Labour. #GeneralElection2024

Ludicrous scenes. Bryson DeChambeau is running at a hundred miles an hour around Pinehurst, giving every fan present a chance to touch the US Open trophy. This is why major championship golf is one of the few things I love as much now as when I was a boy. Pure folklore.

‘I bet you went mad tonight.’ ‘Nah, I was pretty low key really. One more big game to play. It’s important not to peak too early.’

If you consider the high stakes, the context, the pressure, this must be one of the greatest shots in the history of snooker from Ronnie O’Sullivan. The groan of appreciation from Stephen Hendry accompanies it perfectly. #snooker #bbcsnooker

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was at Southampton this evening to see his team beat Plymouth 2-1. Southampton manager Russell Martin was asked if the PM had come to the dressing room to see the team: 'He might have come down, but I have absolutely no interest in saying hello.'

What an extraordinary picture this is from Getty Images, one of the most dramatic to ever emerge from the World Championship at the Crucible. #Snooker

Understated goodbye from one of the great broadcasters. Some emotion too from Steve Rider at the end, and well there might be. Half a century on the screen, guiding the nation through so many sporting moments that we’ll never forget. Pictures from ITV

Put it this way, there’s quite a marked difference between the first four and the second four. Although it could be argued that the fourth of eight was responsible for the most damaging moment in UK politics for generations.

Jeez, the row of recent Prime Ministers at the Cenotaph doesn't half bring home what a shambles UK politics has been in the last 10-15 years. Major, Blair and Brown look like political titans compared to some of the characters who have occupied the highest office since.

Judd Trump conducted himself impeccably last night. He spoke brilliantly on TV, engaged with everyone including many fans well into the early hours and was overall just pure decency despite having lost a world final. A credit to the sport. #snooker
