- The @Lakers were Sid Hartman’s idea. The 26-year-old convinced his wealthy buddy Ben Berger to buy the woeful Detroit Gems (4-40) for $15,000 and move them to Mpls. Hartman then signed George Mikan, Jim Pollard, Vern Mikkelsen & Coach John Kundla. The great franchise was born.
