The idea that Taiwan is a free rider on the back American defense is simply untrue, and grossly uniformed. Sanctioning Taiwan to induce moves toward asymmetric defense is an utterly ridiculous idea.

I completely agree. I also support targeted sanctions to induce Taiwan to move toward asymmetric defense. Taiwan is important. Americans would die in its defense. Ergo we should do everything needed to get them to build a strong defense. @matthewstoller

PLA conducts air-sea joint training around Taiwan: MND early release states that 22x PLA aircraft have been tracked around Taiwan since 0820 local time today. 19 of the aircraft entered the de facto ADIZ. Specific aircraft mentioned: J-16 KJ-500

Overall 22 #PLA aircraft in various types (including J-16, KJ-500, etc.) were detected from 0820hr today. Out of which, 19 crossed the median line of the #Taiwan Strait and entered the northern, central, southwestern and eastern ADIZ

This is the largest number of ships tracked entering the restricted or prohibited water around Kinmen shared publicly. This was more than just the Chinese Coast Guard, ships from multiple Chinese maritime law enforcement agencies were involved.
