We are disgusted to have been overlooked in #Budget2024 despite assurances from @dfheris that IRC/SFI stipends would go up. We are struggling. We are the backbone of Irish research & higher edu. We are undervalued by the state & our universities. We are fighting back - join us

Thanks to @RBoydBarrett for raising the failure of the budget and @DeptofFHed to have any measures addressing the issues facing PGRs. We don't qualify for the tax credits or renter's credits, we don't earn minimum wage. You didn't introduce the promised stipend increase.

    PWO Statement on Budget 2024
Summarised PWO statement on Budget 2024.
Today, the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Public Expenditure announced the measures that will be implemented in the year 2024. Budget 2024 fails to address any of the issues faced by PhD researchers. Context: On the 26th of June 2023, the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Skills (DFHERIS) released the initial report of the National Review of State Supports for PhD Researchers. According to the DFHERIS, this review would inform any changes implemented in this year’s budget. Nonetheless, Budget 2024 does not make any reference to any changes to the current state of finance or status of PhD researchers. We also note the IUA published a statement in response to the Budget today which, likewise, neglects to mention PhD researchers.

Today we sent a public letter to @PhilipNolan_SFI, Director General of the SFI @scienceirel, the largest funder of PhDs in Ireland. We asked for unequivocal advice to all SFI centres to let non-EU PhDs claim expenses for mandatory insurance and the Irish Residence Permit 1/6

An absolutely disgraceful response from the government to the financial hardship of PhD researchers. Not only is this a pathetically small amount, they have once again acted as though an increase to IRC/SFI is an increase to all. (1/n)

The University of Galway – U of Ugh: After just completing a costly rebranding @UniOfGalway, formerly #NUIG, has made the decision to make mistreatment and abuse of postgrad researchers and teachers as part of its new identity. (1/8)

All PhD researchers in Ireland are asked to sign this form before beginning a PhD. This is used by universities to classify PhD salaries as student stipends. This denies PhDs protections such as minimum wage, PRSI, maternity leave and sick leave. irishtimes.com/ireland/educat… 1/4

The recent PhD review suggested that govt. funded PhD stipends are increased to 25K from September. Despite contacting the SFI and IRC multiple times, we've been met with radio silence. HELP us break this silence by signing the petition below.
