- It's official! I will be attending American University Washington, DC to pursue a PhD in economics. I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to be trained by the best feminist economists. And I've always wanted to live somewhere with cherry trees so this is a dream come true 🥲
- A male classmate made an insulting and inappropriate comment to me about my body today. So I did what any woman in a sexist field would do: scared the shit out of him.
- Some news: I’m making a mini economist, due December. Grad school is waiting one year so I can be a human.
- I feel like the mark of an economist is to describe all non-econ things using econ jargon to the point where it’s annoying. Do other professions do this?
- I just went out to dinner and overheard someone at the next table say “diff in diff” and I was like, “I’m sorry, did I hear you say diff in diff?” and that’s how I met an economist out in the wild
- Today I received my first PhD program acceptance!!!! Right now I keep thinking oh crap, they must have made a mistake. But I also feel pretty great. 😊
- Husband walked by my laptop running Stata script and said “who’s this ‘divorced dummy’ you’re writing about?”
- Men are really on here pretending they are hearing about the rampant sexual harassment and abuse in econ for the first time today 👀
- Hiring ASAP: an RA who can analyze my baby's sleep training data and graphs. Unpaid, but it will look great on your CV. My previous baby data analysts have gone on to economics PhDs at Berkeley, Stanford, and Chicago.
- I won my university’s highest academic award! It’s for a student who intends to become a professor the university would be proud to hire. I guess I’d better become a professor so they don’t rescind it in 20 years.
- After I graduated I took a class on literature by immigrants of color and I think it will be more helpful for my economics work than real analysis was. Economics is about people and that class taught me a lot about people. Real analysis just made me deeply troubled.
- Econ will have to accept that part of the solution to its culture of misogyny and sexual abuse is to have more women and fewer men in power. The profession can’t continue to be a patriarchy. Otherwise we take only baby steps.
- This semester I’m taking classes, adjuncting, RAing, doing research, applying for grants, giving 3 conference presentations, doing my oral prelim, parenting a toddler, and am 6 months pregnant. I am tired. Must keep going.
