Trying to think of a war they won. I’m sure it will come to me.

I love how when black people vote for a party with a black leader, it’s “tribal”. When white people vote for a party with a white leader it’s *sips tea* deeply considered and entirely devoid of base ethnic or racial impulses 🤣🤣🤣

Today is a massive day in South African history. It is symbolic that the hearing at the International Court of Justice—a hearing that has vast implications on how Israeli apartheid will be viewed by future generations—comes almost 30 years since the advent of our own democracy 🧵

As many have pointed out, the BBC’s take is bullshit. If there is a more religiously tolerant country on earth than South Africa, lemme know where it is. Call the country out for its many faults. But don’t invent additional ones.

“In South Africa, there is no threat, harm…to the Jewish people” says Justice Minister “There is no anti-Semitism in South Africa” Ronald Lamola tells Stephen Sackur, despite a reported rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the country since October 7

Another thing is clear: the court did not accept, at least in my initial reading of the ruling, a SINGLE argument presented by the Israeli legal team. Not one. Again, that is a historic indictment of what is happening in Gaza, and those who choose to endorse it.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Jacob Zuma and his cabal destroyed the South African economy for a generation. Eskom is the Death Star, but the evil empire exists in every single sector, in every single boardroom. #recession

For 25 years, the ANC & the DA have failed to drive an integration agenda in Cape Town. Look at Hout Bay. Ask the people of Imizamo Yethu how welcome they feel here. Ask the people across the valley in overcrowded Hangberg if conditions are improving. We can all do better.

South Africa is a democracy with no viable opposition politics. All contestation happens within the ANC and its various factions — Malema was merely highlighting his factional alignment — and the battle is not ideological, but over who gets to eat what, when. It’s horrific.

Are South Africans always going to ignore the wild and nutty life of Deputy President David Mabuza, who nearly dies in car crashes about three times a year, and doesn’t appear to have any ambitions other than going to Russia every weekend?
