    Okay, here's what I found. The August 9, 1936 NY Times ran a piece about the heat wave of August 1896 that quotes a paragraph from their Aug 18, 1896 issue about "1,258 horses" dying.

    But! I went through the Aug 18, 1896 NY Times and came up short 1257 expired equines. I could only find one dead horse in there, and it was killed by lightning, not heat.
