Met a lot of women like #JACKIEWEAVER calm, intelligent, purposeful, patient, focussed on the issues. I’ve also met a lot of angry, power crazed men who can’t cope with a woman having authority. Raising a glass tonight 🍷 to all the Jackie Weavers in local government & beyond 🙌

Beyond the humour, the behaviour Jackie Weaver experienced is common place in all levels of politics. Good on her for sticking to it, but people doing their best in local politics, especially women, shouldn't have to put up with that. Deeply off-putting to younger generations.

A basic rule of leadership for me is always recruit people who are much better than you. People who bring insight, wisdom, thoughtfulness add great value to the team. But so many leaders seem scared of talent that is better than them. They see it as a threat when it’s a strength

How we feel about work comes mainly from our relationship with our manager. Their ability to listen deeply & empathy towards us is a strong indicator of how happy we are in our jobs; yet empathetic leadership isn’t prized in person specs or generally encouraged by organisations.

Had a sad conversation with a former colleague today. They said “I love your tweets. You say what I think but can’t say. I’m really sorry I don’t “like” them but leaders in my organisation police people’s twitter likes. It’s career suicide” is this normal in an open NHS culture?

Never met my Dad. Tracked him down but his family said he wouldn’t be interested. This lovely man adopted me & my sister & gave us all the love & support we needed. A feminist he gave me strong values; made me go to uni when I was scared & died too young. Dads are who love us 💕

Maude our lovely gentle rescue ⁦@GalgosdelSol⁩ is not a very sneaky sneak thief 😂 she loves butter 🧈 stole some from the kitchen but brought it upstairs because she needed help opening the tub. I love her innocence 😍

This guy 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 is my Director of Public Health in Blackburn where I live. He has been told TODAY at 5pm that he starts a tracing system in 10 hours. He has: - no information on system protocol - No additional resources in place locally - 0 standard operating procedures

#COVID19 #Testandtrace Resources 4 local government are not allocated, the systems protocols between levels are not agreed, the SOPs are not agreed, there is not enough testing capacity to even complete the care homes testing for 3 weeks-this system is not up and running yet!

I wrote this in disbelief yesterday because I couldn’t believe some of the decisions being taken. Like others I’m speaking out about it. Local NHS, councils & communities can save our lives through testing & contact tracing not contact centres & apps.

In my personal experience, people desperate to be more senior for the status & title of accountable officer rarely make the best leaders. The single biggest motivation in my career has been applying for a job to stop a plonker getting it 😐

We won’t be remembered for our job titles, how high we climbed in management structures, plaudits received. We’ll be remembered for how we made people feel, especially those with no voice, the actual difference we made to people’s lives & the light in the eyes of those we love.

Most of us will have experienced micromanagement & know it doesn’t work. It leaves people feeling dispirited & worthless. Believing in people, trusting them to innovate & tackle big scary work with support brings out the best in people. Building a team by believing in each other
