I challenge anyone who thinks like this to take 5 to 10 mg of Naloxone. Seriously. It is extremely safe, short acting, isn’t even illegal, can be taken intranasally, and may even upregulate your opioid receptors a little bit and give a very slight valence boost for a few days.

This is such an outstanding example of a mind design which lacks non-symbolic metacognition. I didn’t quite realize how outstandingly good it was when it first happened. It’s perhaps the best such example I’ve ever come across.

If we hooked it up to eyes, hands, etc., we could train it to report being aware of itself & world. If we gave it another "sensor" that we told it tracked when it "really felt" other inputs, we could train it to report what that sensor said. How is our "real" feeling different?

Thanks! Yes, we will be collecting extensive abuse liability data for each of our programs, and if any of them show those kinds of signals such that the risk / benefit equation is questionable (euphoria being a great example), we wouldn't want to develop them and definitely

A very useful lens through which to analyze this. What damage would have occurred if none of the LLMs developed so far had been optimized for safety/rlhf’d in any way whatsoever? Minimal to zero. Important to remember this as we begin to leave the era of passive safety behind.

You can remove the bulk of it and still maintain cognition. I see no reason why beings couldn’t exist that would be BOTH far more intelligent, and possessed of hedonic baselines far more positively valenced, than we humans.
