Hi, I’m a librarian. Here’s why this is really, really bad.

I don’t t think this should be a hot take but if you refuse to treat people with certain drugs because it’s against your religion, or for ideological reasons, you should not have the right to practice medicine.

    1. Libraries being closed decreases not only the amount of time public can access materials, but the amount of time staff has to process them and do other work. This won’t just create inaccessibility, it will also slow down everything.

    2. Libraries plan their programming and schedule weeks if not months in advance. In just about two weeks, all of these NY libraries will have to shift around and reschedule if not cancel weekend programs. This is a waste of time and money.

    3. Librarians, particularly public librarians, will bear the brunt of this. They will get complaints, they will get yelled at, and they will also (possibly) lose out on weekend pay. This screws over some of our best public servants.

    4. We will also lose librarian jobs over this. Likely, the city will let positions sit empty when vacant, since they have the excuse of less open hours. This will put more pressure on remaining staff, who are already likely underpaid.

    7. As we go into the cold months, libraries provide essential places for people to stay warm. They are one of the only places people have to use the bathroom, plug in their phone, or just sit down somewhere warm and dry.

    6. The people most effected by this will likely be children. They do not have the opportunity to go to the library whenever the fancy takes them, they need an escort, so that has to figure into an adult’s schedule.

    9. To conclude, this is a big, big mistake. As librarians, we are lucky to have some of the best jobs in the world, and people love the service we provide. The library is a good place, a happy place for a lot of people. NYC deserves better.

    5. There is already an exodus of library professionals since the failures of the pandemic. Rather, the pandemic exposed a lot of existing issues. We are all struggling already to fill positions that would have been desirable just five years ago.
