This is one of my all-time favorite illustrations, because this is what life IS. Everyone has low times, and if we are there for each other, we all have a better chance of getting through it. Empathy is a survival trait, not a problem!

When I was eight, we had two child molesters on our block. When we moved, that number dropped to one. I don't know about the one left behind, but the one who lived with us never spent a second in jail. Thankfully, he's dead now.

I came across something I wrote some years back, and I think it is relevant to the "Man or Bear?" conversation. So, a thread, but first some observations: When a woman is in an abusive relationship, what's the first thing people say? "Why doesn't she just leave?"

And I'd like to point out, first of all, that this puts the onus to fix things on the woman. Again. She's being abused, and fears for her life, but it's on HER to fix it. Why?

Because unlike men, BEARS DO NOT DEDICATE THEIR LIVES TO CHASING, HARASSING, BEATING, RAPING, OR KILLING WOMEN. But too many men DO.

So here's my older post: Why don’t women leave? Because of financial reasons. Because they’ve been programmed by subtle, abusive propaganda to believe that they cannot survive on their own. That they’re not good enough, not smart enough, not capable enough.

But it begs the question - why do we ask that? It upsets me that we say "Why doesn't she leave?" WE ARE ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION!! We SHOULD be asking “Why isn’t he arrested?”

Or “Why doesn’t someone help HER?” Or “Why don’t we teach our young men to respect women?” But no. We ask: “Why doesn’t she leave?”

Tell you what. Get up, walk out of your house. Right now. Take nothing with you except what you can carry, and go start a new life. Go without your credit and debit cards. If you’re lucky, maybe you can take a few dollars in your pocket. But go. Right now. Start a new life.

Okay, now try walking out of your house and starting a new life from scratch with absolutely nothing but what you can grab and carry in five minutes… and then imagine that a murderer is after you — and HE has resources that you lack.

Because they’ve been told in many subtle and not-so-subtle ways that they are “lucky” that the abuser loves them, because nobody else would. They are unlovable, thus “lucky” to have someone who cares, even if that “caring” is done at the end of a fist.

He can follow you. He might kill you and your children. Still easy to walk away? Even WITHOUT the brainwashing done by abusers to make it nearly impossible for a woman to leave, going out and starting a new life with NOTHING is incredibly hard.

Easy, right? No? You think I’m crazy for suggesting that you walk away from everything you have, and start over?

They took him to jail for an unpaid traffic ticket. Not because he was threatening my life in the hearing of police officers, although he did…. they flat-out told me they couldn’t take him away for that. This was in 1983. Guess who told them to check for tickets?
