    It is not fair that parents, who might otherwise not do so, should feel pressure to baptize their children in order to gain admission to their local school. That is why I am proposing to remove the role that religion plays in school admissions in virtually all primary schools

    From today, no government department or agency will buy single-use plastic cups, cutlery or straws for use within their offices. The govt must be the first to show that it takes policies for sustainability seriously, if we are to persuade the rest of society to make changes

    I will sign an order this morning to remove religion as a factor that can be used in admissions in virtually all primary schools. This applies from today. I will also bring into operation other key parts of the School Admissions Act to ensure greater fairness in admissions

    Education (Admission to Schools) Bill has this evening passed the Dáil and Seanad and will now go to the President. Historic reforms in this Bill will remove religion as a criteria in admissions in virtually all primary schools, ban waiting lists, end fees relating to admissions

    The Dàil has tonight passed the School Admissions Bill, including my amendment to remove the role that religion plays in school admissions in virtually all primary schools. The legislation will have a historic impact on how children access their local school.
