One of the most basic facts about intelligence is that smarter people learn faster than average (and less intelligent people learn more slowly). This has an obvious implication for the education system: high-IQ students are going to master the curriculum more quickly.

A new study from Norway has a lot to say about the Flynn effect, which is the gradual increase in IQ that has occurred over time. Norway has some of the best data for investigating the Flynn effect. The country tested nearly every young adult male with an intelligence test from

It takes smarter people to perform more complex jobs. And (generally) those people get paid more. In a recent study, the average IQ of workers in an occupation correlated r > .814-874 with the complexity of that job and r = .632 to .739 with the average pay (logarithmically

A new article investigates the relationship between IQ (at ages 17-18) and mental health diagnoses (at ages 36-40) in >95% of Norwegian men. The results show how powerful IQ is as a predictor for later life outcomes. 19.38% of men were diagnosed with at least one mental disorder

IQ is highly heritable, but heritability is not set in stone. It depends on the environment that a population is in. As a result, many scientists have hypothesized that heritability might be higher in environments that permit people to develop to their full genetic potential. In

Smarter people, generally, have children with other smarter people--a process called "assortative mating." But this self-sorting tendency start before adulthood. You could call it "assortative friending." In a sample of 810 fourth-graders, the IQs of best friends correlated r =

Intelligence is influenced by genes. But does this mean a DNA test can predict IQ? Yes! 🧬🧠 In this new meta-analysis, a score based on DNA variants (called a "polygenic score," or PGS) had an average correlation of r = .245 with IQ across 32 data points from 9 studies of

Combining data from different twin and adoptee studies, @tuckerdrob and his coauthor published one of the most important meta-analyses on intelligence. Here are the results: First, they found that IQ is very unstable in infancy and and very stable in adulthood. (This isn't a new

One of the most important studies on intelligence is the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY). For nearly 50 years, the psychologists have identified young people with high ability in math and language arts and followed their development into late middle age. Here are

In 2011, @angeladuckw published a meta-analysis claiming that motivation could raise IQs by 9.6 points. Unbeknownst to her and her colleagues, about 1/4 of the data in that meta-analysis were fraudulent. Our Chief Scientist, @Russwarne, identified the fraudulent article used in

One persistent finding in intelligence research is a large sex difference in spatial ability. On average, men tend to perform better on spatial tasks than women. This includes object rotation tasks that often appear on intelligence tests. An interesting article examines this

Smarter people are healthier, but sometimes it is surprising how pervasive that relationship is. In a Scottish longitudinal study, IQ at age 11 predicted lower blood pressure 66 years later! Controlling for socioeconomic status, body mass index, height, smoking history, sex,
