My foreword to a new posthumous collection of writings by my father, DANIEL ELLSBERG: "Truth and Consequence: Reflections on Catastrophe, Civil Resistance, and Hope" (Bloomsbury). This is my best reflection of what he was about--a message for today.

My dear father, #DanielEllsberg, died this morning June 16 at 1:24 a.m., four months after his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer. His family surrounded him as he took his last breath. He had no pain and died peacefully at home. commondreams.org/opinion/danielโ€ฆ

In 1971, after the Justice Dept enjoined The NY Times from publishing the Pentagon Papers, my father gave them to the @washingtonpost. It was ultimately the call of Katherine Graham, publisher/owner. She was warned that her paperโ€™s survival was on the line. She didnโ€™t blink.

    Replying to @RobertEllsberg
At one point he said, if he were to have a gravestone, that he would say: "He became a part of the anti-Vietnam and anti-nuclear movement." By chance, my interview about him, for release this Father's Day weekend, was posted today.

I remember when my dad spent 2 yrs in Vietnam, and came home prepared to spend 115 yrs in prison to stop the war and the President sent a secret intelligence unit to โ€œget the SOB,โ€ tried to bribe his judge, sent a team to โ€œincapacitate him totally.โ€ Simple, easy times.

Dorothy Day was speaking at a college when a young man launched into a long tirade, calling her a communist, a traitor, a heretic, etc. She listened patiently and when he was done she replied, โ€œYou neglected to mention that I was once arrested on a morals charge in Chicago.โ€

Got it: If Jesus had sheltered Anne Frank, or hidden a runaway slave, or allowed Martin Luther King to use a segregated restroom, and thus broken the law, he would have been sinful, and "he would not have been our Messiah." This is #SlaveholderReligion, not the Gospel.

The 100th birthday of Sophie Scholl, b. 5/9/1921, who was beheaded by the Nazis in 1943 for her role as a member of the White Rose, a circle of young people who distributed leaflets denouncing the crimes of the regime. She was 21. She saw and spoke the truth. Her spirit lives.

I appreciate this memorial about my father by @ggrenwald above any I have read today--for his comprehensive review of his bio & history, for his attention to themes generally overlooked about his post-Vietnam life, but particularly for deep appreciation of his human qualities.๐Ÿ™
