- In Guatemala 🇬🇹, first stop on visit of Central America, I met with families forced to leave their homes in search of safety. I also saw firsthand how UNHCR is working with the Government, local communities & partners to protect refugees, provide essential services & solutions.
- In Honduras, +250K are internally displaced because of violence. I'm impressed by the commitment of students, teachers, and youth to building a better future for their communities. Their work is a message of hope, and UNHCR will continue supporting their efforts.
- Meeting displaced families in Socoura, Mali, was a profound reminder of the human capacity for strength and resilience. UNHCR is committed to supporting them reclaim their dignity & rebuild their lives through localization efforts. #UNHCR #WithRefugees
- From Tapachula to Tijuana, from Tegucigalpa to Guatemala City, the courage of displaced people underscores the urgent need for a hemispheric approach in Central America & Mexico. Collaborative action is key to address unprecedented displacement challenges.
- Glad to participate in #Cartagena40 consultations in 🇲🇽 Throughout my career, I’ve seen the need for collective action in addressing forced displacement. The Cartagena process continues to guide an innovative response rooted in regional solidarity for those needing protection.Comenzamos en 🇲🇽 las consultas de Cartagena+40. Gracias a la solidaridad regional, avanzamos en la actualización del instrumento que desde 1984 ha contribuido enormemente a proteger a las personas desplazadas por la fuerza en la región. #SomosCartagena @SRE_mx @Minrel_Chile
- Enormously encouraged by the African Union's efforts to address statelessness through a new protocol. Precisely the sort of leadership that is needed to resolve and prevent statelessness and ensure stateless people have access to fundamental rights.
- In Aceh 🇮🇩, I met young Rohingya women and girls who have survived deadly boat journeys. Along the way, they had lost everything, but not hope. We must strengthen our resolve to find solutions for refugees like them, in Asia and beyond.
- Nearly 75% of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are women + girls. They face additional challenges and risks to their wellbeing. UN @Refugees and our partners are working in Bangladesh to ensure they receive the protection they need. #RohingyaResponse2024 unhcr.org/news/press-rel…
- Wrapping up my mission to S Africa, my first as UN @Refugees Asst High Commissioner for Protection. I've had productive discussions here, but I was most impressed with the refugees I met. They're true community leaders and I'm grateful for the opportunity to meet with them.
- In 2023, +140K sought asylum in 🇲🇽, people like Maria & her family, whom I met at @AlbergueHyS in Tapachula. After fleeing Guatemala & facing many hardships, they found a chance at a new life. With UNHCR support they will soon be in a new city w/ employment & education.
- Meet Denise. She took up tailoring to find a means to support her family. After fleeing the war, one of the most effective ways women and girls can rebuild their lives is through the opportunity to work and earn a living. Let’s invest in refugee women and girls. #IWD2024
- The Global #RefugeeForum was modern multilateralism in action. From businesses to governments to refugees themselves, the world came together for real solutions. My take in @unatcolumbia's blog on why this was a rare international cooperation success: multilateralism.sipa.columbia.edu/news/new-multi…
