Slavery shaped every aspect of NJ, but too many believe it never happened here. That’s why, last Juneteenth, we created the first-of-its-kind NJ Reparations Council. Join us on 6/19, one year after we created the Council, for “The Promise of Juneteenth”: njpac.org/event/the-prom…

We owe Darnella Frazier a debt of gratitude. 3 years ago today, Darnella, just 17, recorded George Floyd’s murder by police. Her recording inspired the largest protests in American history.  As we honor Mr. Floyd’s life, may we all have Darnella’s courage to record injustice.

Darnella Frazier, 19, held guilt that courageously recording George Floyd’s killing wasn’t enough. Last week she told us, “It’s not about what I should have done, it’s what the police should have done. I’ve held that guilt for a very long time & tonight I choose to let it go.”

"Hitler didn't snub me; it was our president [FDR] who snubbed me. The president didn’t even send a telegram." —Jesse Owens after winning 4 GOLD medals in 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. FDR invited each white US olympian to the White House, but not Jesse. #BlackHistoryMonth

Black kids know, as early as the 2nd grade, that they can be killed by the police. Directions: Add a predicate to each sentence below. 1. The police officer: “killed a boy”—2nd grade Black student in New Jersey

After shattering Hitler’s Aryan superiority claim, Jesse Owens, the greatest athlete in the world, returned to racism as a second-class citizen in the US. He toured the US racing local sprinters & HORSES, and giving speeches to make ends meet, and was forced to file bankruptcy.

50 years after the #FairHousingAct, here’s the difficult reality: It would take a Black family 228 YEARS And a Latino family 84 YEARS to achieve the wealth that the average white family has TODAY. Why? Systemic racism, says @demelza_baer: bit.ly/2Cpl2o3

NJ was known as the “slave state of the North,” but too many believe it never happened here. Slavery shaped every aspect of NJ. That’s why we created the first-of-its-kind NJ Reparations Council. We aren’t afraid to say #reparations. Watch the launch: fb.watch/lj2pNv5UYg/?mi…

Beautiful to see @george_clinton, the godfather of funk, visit his alma mater, @CityofNewarkNJ’s Avon Avenue, where he created Parliament in the 5th grade! “Godfather, you are an example that our scholars can change the world starting right here,” said Principal Charity Haygood.

Mr. Morris, 74, voted for the first time in his life today. NJ first denied voting to people w/ convictions in 1844—when it restricted voting to white men. Together, we changed that. “Too many people died without the right to vote. I voted for them today. And for me,” he said.

“You have to take care of yourself or you won’t be here…You say you are working on behalf of your people, but you will have deprived your people of the work because you will be gone.”—@nhannahjones w/ @jelani9 recounting advice from Ta-Nehisi Coates. “Now, I’m great,” she said.

BREAKING: @CityofNewarkNJ just passed an historic ordinance lowering the age to 16 for school board elections! In a city where turnout in school board elections is 3%, 7,000+ 16- & 17-year-olds—90% of whom are Black & Brown—can now vote in those elections! This is democracy!

Tia voted for the first time in her life after losing her voting rights at 18. She’s one of 83,000 people whose voting rights were restored in NJ due to our collective #1844NoMore advocacy. “I want everybody to have this feeling...& to know that their voice matters,” she said.
