I sent an acceptance email last night to a gentleman who, turns out, is 73-year-old. He asked me to send his payment for his story as a check instead of PayPal because...(you guys!)...he wants to frame it since it'll be his 1st published piece of writing. 😊😭😍 Never give up!!

I may never be an author's dream publication but being the first paying publication for many authors sure feels fine.

I love the 'Dear Editors' submission starters. Makes me laugh, thinking about having a team. It's just me, y'all. One decent dude reading, responding, designing, paying for, and trying to get people to care about, believe in and buy these lovely issues with your writing inside.

When I catch a typo in a submission (as I just did), I wince, not because it's some unforgivable error, but because I know the horror of being a writer who rereads a piece after clicking send, spotting the mistake, and feeling like the world has caved in. Fear not, you're good.

My brother Greg died 2 years ago today after a short yet horrifically long brain cancer. He wasn't a reader, but the minute I told him I was starting this magazine, he subscribed & kept every issue out in his house. He was kind & funny & always there & I miss him terribly 💔

When receiving a decline/rejection, would you find it helpful/pleasing to know that your piece was 'oh so close' or 'one of the last pieces declined'? Or does that make the decline even more difficult to receive?

Some things I'm thinking about re chapbook publishing: 1) No submission fees 2) I prefer upfront & escalating (w/ each print press run of 100) author payments, instead of royalties 3) Authors should get a fair few copies free (from each print press run) 4) This is gonna be fun

I pay writers to write & to read at events. I don't charge submission fees. I respond to emails & fulfill orders quickly. I'm on time for everything. I promote, nominate, champion & support contributors & authors. I'm accountable & present. This should be the norm, not an anomaly

As I prepare to read the ~2000 pieces of writing that will be submitted during this 48-hour window (of which ~13.5 hours remain), I'm now thinking about using this brief window to make both Issues 10 & 11. Would anyone object to being accepted for a springtime print publication?

I'm currently writing submission guidelines for Stanchion Book Press. Every author who considers Stanchion a worthy home for their work and submits a book/chapbook manuscript will have a full understanding of the finances, requirements, and expectations. Transparent, fair & kind.

She wrote the book, with original prose and erasure poetry, giving voice to Shakespeare's women — their unspoken perspectives & unwritten endings.
Erasure poem from Shakespeare, from The Woman's Part by Jo Gatford.

Call for submissions! Start digging up those childhood memories for the @stanchionzine “Away From Home” anthology. Editors @fklein907 & @ketchiklein want your poems & prose about getting outside your comfort zone. Full submission guidelines coming soon stanchionzine.com/away-from-home
A black and white image with a row of houses along the bottom of the image. Only the tops of the houses are visible. They are larger on the left side of the image, and become smaller on the right side. The text says, “Stanchion Presents Away from Home: an anthology of poetry and prose about stepping inside someone else’s home…and outside the familiar.”
