I think the BC public has moved well past that " 2ยฐ would be quite nice" stage, but now our problems lie with government technical capacity and politicized management. We went through a period starting in the mid 90s when federal and prov govts focused on cutting deficits. 1/?

So. Today at workshop, about 100 people. Me the sole masker. Chatted quite a bit with the person sitting next to me. Later in the day, he says "How will I recognize you next time I see you of you don't take your mask off? At a workshop with a lot of scientists and engineers....

Smoke alarm inspector just came by. Asked him to wear a mask, gave him an earloop N95. He didn't unfold it, put a loop over one ear and held the other loop up against his face. Said he was "wearing it". Sigh. Should I complain to his employer?

I'm still baffled by the response I got from the organizer of my Sept high-school reunion: ...no Covid protocols in place...probably best you don't come...I am choosing to live my life without fear...unless I want to live in a bubble, I will continue to live my life as "normal"

Do people know how insulting it is to not #MaskUp around other people? Wearing a mask is like saying: I know that SARS2 is airborne. I know that I might be infected and not have symptoms. I care about the health of people around me, as well as those that might be here later.

So.... I was steeling myself to attend an in-person seminar tomorrow with a bunch of unmasked academics. Expecting to be the only one masked up (engineers really should know better). Email this morning: Seminar postponed. Covid.

Heh heh, glad you asked! Did you know that it's not masks that make it hard to recognize someone, but sunglasses? So wear sunglasses to hide your identity! And here's the latest Covid hazard ranking from @MoriartyLab , she's a professor at UofT! And do you know about Long Covid?

Sigh. As an engineer, I also thought my field would be way past this by now. I mean, it was what we few women engineers went through regularly back in the 80's. Not enough has changed is what the young women engineers tell me now though.

Had a similar experience once. Next was: Officer: What is the conference about? What kind of projects do you work on? Who hires you? Where did you go to school? Me:...why are you asking all these questions? Officer: I did a BSc in physical geography and I'm thinking about a MSc!

Just ran into my neighbour in the hallway - they are a manager at a local community + aquatic centre. Took one look at me and said "Good thing you are wearing a mask still, we are in another Covid wave now. I can tell by how many staff are off sick and how empty the centre is"

Sigh. Mask efficiency and virus transmission are largely in the domain of engineering and applied physics. In these fields, RCTs are basically the lowest level of evidence, not the best.

Not all evidence is equally valid. When we develop guidelines there is a hierarchy of evidence that we have to follow. Systematic reviews of RCTs are the best evidence.

You have at least a 5-10% chance of getting Long Covid with each infection! And if the average person gets infected twice per year, in about 5 years there's like a 50% cumulative probability that you'll have LC! And vaccines don't change that much...

Ventilation (confirmed by CO2 monitoring). Local air filtering (CR boxes, commercial HEPA, whatever) - lots of them to reduce near-field transmission risk. -ve RAT (since PCR is hard to get) for admission to event (supply tests at door) Promotion of mask-wearing with free N95s

Just to be clear, it's presumed to be the first human case because with no testing how would we know?
