USTR: "The elasticity of import prices with respect to tariffs, φ, is 0.25. The recent experience with U.S. tariffs on China has demonstrated that tariff passthrough to retail prices was low (Cavallo et al, 2021)." Cavallo et al: φ is 0.945. aeaweb.org/articles?id=10…

    I stand corrected. The formula is not deficit/imports. The formula is surplus/(imports * ε * φ), where ε = -4 and φ = 0.25. That happens to equal deficits/imports. ustr.gov/issue-areas/re… via @ericadyork

Why do economists talk about "infinitely-lived" agents? Are they afraid to say "immortal"?

I have seen the phrase "I structurally estimate the model" in too many job-market papers this month. JMCs, please read @PhilHaile: "Models, Measurement, and the Language of Empirical Economics" sites.google.com/view/philhaile… At least graduate from confusion and abuse 201 to 202...

PhD students underestimate the value of writing well. Faculty skim dozens of JMPs in a short time. If your contribution is unclear, you will get fewer interviews. Editing improves economics papers (RCT): doi.org/10.1016/j.jebo… I am happy to recommend amyedits.net

Job-market candidates: - Download 10 JMPs in your field, read them in ≤5 hours, and rank them from best to worst. Now you know why recruiting committees value readability. - Editing improves paper quality. See RCT: doi.org/10.1016/j.jebo… (More at jdingel.com/teaching/advic…)

Grad students: Read everything Jesse Shapiro posts at scholar.harvard.edu/shapiro/notes-…. Office meetings and student talks are often just me reciting "write an aspirational intro", "Your audience does not care about your topic", or "No one wants to see your underwear".
