    The soldier who returned from coma Maj Amardeep Singh, 44 RR, suffered splinter injuries to the brain while ambushed in Shopian. He was in coma for an extended period but awoke to life. Though disabled, he was promoted to Lt Col. With his wife, Maj Sheela, of Signals Regt.

    A cobra & two pups had fallen into a dry well and it was 48 hours before they could be rescued by wildlife conservationist Nikhil Sanger. In that critical period, the panicky, innocent pups had clambered onto the adult cobra but the mature snake had not bitten them.

    Naik Avtar was the gun layer who fired 25 HEER shells on Tololing's Barbaad bunker on June 6, 1999, in the first trial of Bofors in the direct fire mode. His accurate hits validated his Commander's belief in direct fire adapted to high-altitude targets, and the rest is history.

    We need to remember all our Kargil heroes, not just a handful who are repeated every Vijay Divas, rest.... Army launches "special outreach" to relatives of all 545 KIA during Op Vijay, irrespective of whether they got gallantry medal. Army personnel to visit all the homes.

    On May 26, I witnessed IAF strikes on Drass ridge lines. These were ineffective. The next day, Sq Ldr M Nachiketa, VSM, of 9 Sq crashed his MiG 27 in Batalik. This was because not of enemy fire but that the pilot fired his front guns at high altitude, which was not authorised as
