- What the fuck is this kind of thing doing on my campus, being wielded against my students
- Virginia State Police pointing guns directly at us on the anniversary of the Kent State Massacre
00:00 - Tweeting this out here because I'm not sure what else to do. Short 🧵: Today an undergraduate student of mine told me that last night a strange man - approx late 20s, white, brown hair - knocked on their door and said he knew they were my student and that I worked with migrants.
- So, not long ago, we learned from the Lancet that the number of Palestinians killed was likely ~200,000. But during the DNC protests I mostly saw activists still using the seemingly wildly conservative estimate of 40,000. Did I miss something? Why are we not saying 200,000?
- Look at how much more joyous and, frankly, just plain interesting this commencement is versus the norm. Administrators strip the life out of all things. We need to take our universities, endowments, and rituals back. You’re unable to view this Post because this account owner limits who can view their Posts. Learn more
- We are in a very weird moment where it feels like, at least to me, everyone is over-therapized but under-psychoanalyzed. Lots of people feeling like they’ve done the work, but the work that has been done is mostly superficial and unhelpful. Don’t know what to do about that.
- Once again: Students at southern schools like UT Austin and Emory often face the most brutal forms of state violence first. This then sets the tone for the rest of the US. If shooting Emory students is not roundly denounced now it will eventually begin at Columbia as well.Total chaos at Emory University as Atlanta Police shoot students with pepperballs and attack encampment
00:00 - The Virginia State Police were shoving an elderly woman with a cane. When a bystander came to help keep her on her feet, the police snatched them and charged them with “assaulting an officer.” As you can see, there was never any assault. All lies.
00:00 - Replying to @VonkLeviWe don't know who this guy was. One possibility is that he's working for immigration, but I'm being told that another possibility is that he is a racist vigilante. There is, of course, a history of them in Charlottesville, and they like to harass faculty here.
- Replying to @VonkLeviI am in touch with the appropriate people and next steps are being taken. Just felt that others should know. Keep an eye out and stay safe.
- Replying to @VonkLeviThis student and I gave a publicly advertised co-talk on immigration at UVA about a month ago. It seems that this man saw the advertisement, somehow found my student's personal address, and then went to their house to question them about me. Very scary.
- Replying to @VonkLeviHe specifically asked them about my book Border Hacker, and the whereabouts of the undocumented people in the book. He wanted to know where they were and what they were doing today. When my student declined to answer, the man turned around and walked away.
- The encampment had less than fifty students in it this morning before the cops showed up. Now there’s easily a thousand here.
