The far-right is a real threat, and is rising as part of a coordinated effort with international links. All this happened before btw, in the 1920s and 1930s. Literally the same stuff, now featuring some of the same groups. This government is sleepwalking into civil war.

One interesting thing about Berlin is how comfortably people with fascist ideologies move through it. Last week, on my way to coffee with a friend in the middle of town, I saw three guys dressed like this on our street. They weren't making a fuss - they were right at home.

I've posted a lot of football content, which isn't exactly Windrush related, for an additional reason. Southgate is one of a vanishingly small number of public personalities, who, at the height of insane BLM backlash and attacks on Black players, stood by them. Didn't tell them

"..., raise awareness and educate." This seems so basic. Hardly any White media personality with a real, serious platform has said it. theplayerstribune.com/posts/dear-eng…

It has been clear for a while that @ukhomeoffice is unfit to run the Windrush Compensation Scheme, and unwilling to make the kind of changes needed to fix it. You've probably seen us "calling" for the Scheme to be moved. Calling time's over now. [1/6]

A senior staffer recently told victims at a Windrush engagement event that compensation is wildly delayed (and has to be squeezed like blood from stone when it does come) because @ukhomeoffice has to be careful, what with it being taxpayer money. theguardian.com/politics/2021/…

This is what solidarity is. It's showing up, speaking out, taking a stand, and backing your Black and Brown players when the *GOVT* slams them and people post monkey emojis and tell them to go back to Africa. This is the kind of behaviour that actually tackles racism.

And what has been the outcome? I don't know that there is any direct causal relationship between these things, but I don't remember England fans doing stuff like this on TV when I was growing up. It was usually something awful, if they were shown at all.

🧵: The Post Office scandal is a stain on govt - hundreds of workers prosecuted and convicted on the basis of garbage evidence, lives upended, a number of victims now dead without having seen justice or compensation in their lifetimes. [1/]

Carl was born in Britain and held a British passport, which @ukhomeoffice confiscated for no apparent reason. Many journos have skirted reporting his story b/c it doesn't fit the expected Windrush narrative - but not @mrjamesob! Tune in today. This is Carl's story. Part 1/5:

Not going on tv when you get beaten, claiming your opponents have stirred up divisive rhetoric. The people, who employ you, were asking for reports on the work you've done. I don't know every single thing about him, but he has definitely got it right on this, and for that 💐

A slightly longer explainer 🧵, breaking all this down step-by-step, because predictably, @ukhomeoffice has flooded the field with mis- and disinformation, and it deserves unpacking: The power to take citizenship away has existed in some form for a very long time. [1/n]

Perhaps not hypocrisy per se, but there is definitely something strange about a Home Sec who wants to enhance powers to strip citizenship from naturalised and dual citizenship holding Britons, given her own background. Clause 9 of NABB will do that; [1/5]

In the unlikely event that anyone has forgotten, this was the sort of climate into which he, a White man, by all accounts part of the establishment in his sector and presumably cognisant of problems it might have caused him, published that PT piece.

Jacqui Smith was Home Secretary presiding over the ruinously stupid points-based system, the objective of which was to thwart legitimate applications. I know this because I made a legitimate application and she took me, a then early 20s, terrified, child person alone

Jacqui will make an excellent minister. She was one of the people who inspired Jo into politics & for the last four years has chaired the Jo Cox Foundation with clarity & passion. Government will be better with her in it. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
