The problem with virtual conferences is you still have to keep the rest of your work and life going, rather than escape into conference world for a week - not so easy when you have screaming kids that need you when you are meant to be live online - how are people managing this?
I’m honoured to announce I have been promoted to Professor of Developmental Biophysics @UCL. I would like to thank all my lab members, collaborators, colleagues, mentors and family for their continued support! None of this would be possible without them!

It’s finally official! I’m delighted to announce that I have been awarded an MRC Senior Non Clinical Fellowship to work on mechanical robustness during development and repair. Thank you @The_MRC for the continued support! And thanks to my fab lab, here celebrating with dim sum!
Incredibly honoured to be awarded the @Official_BSCB Women in Cell Biology Early Career Medal! Thank you for recognising the importance of mechanobiology in cell biology. And thank you to my great lab who did all the hard work!
I had to strategically plan when to have kids to minimise the “penalties”, but scientist mothers shouldn’t have to do this… the system needs to change so that women scientists are not penalised for wanting to be mothers as well.
Enjoying a day to myself between conferences. People often forget the joys of #academia, travelling around the world, meeting amazing people, not to mention the intellectual freedom and flexibility to balance work and family! #AcademicTwitter#academiclife#joysofacademia
🏆I am delighted to announce that the winner of this year’s Early Career Award in Mechanobiology is @YanlanMao. 👏👏👏 She will receive the award at the @BiophysicalSoc Annual Meeting in San Diego on 15/2. Congrats Yanlan! 🙌🔝 ucl.ac.uk/lmcb/users/yan…
BREAKING NEWS:
The 2021 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded jointly to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian “for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.”
Received this beautiful medal in the post today! Thank you @RoyalMicroSoc for the recognition, I’m incredibly honoured. Looking forward to #mmc2021 next week where I will present the medal talk on Tuesday at 2.30pm - do come and join us! #microscopy#bioimaging
A birthday present to myself - a new office to celebrate a new decade for me and a new decade of the Mao Lab! Don’t you just love the orange velvet armchairs?! We all deserve an office you actually want to spend time in!
Thank you @ListerInstitute for this #ListerPrize! The fully flexible £250k funding has made a huge difference to my lab and career! What a wonderful scheme, everyone eligible should apply!
Today we had the honour of joining @YanlanMao for her much-delayed #ListerPrize presentation @LMCB_UCL. And what a presentation it was, from an incredibly worthy Fellow!
Congratulations on all your work to date, Yanlan, from all of us at the Lister Institute.
