As our societies continue to dehumanize - even demonize - refugees, it’s important to be constantly reminded who they are.
A Syrian refugee kisses his daughter as he walks through a rainstorm towards Greece's border with Macedonia, near the village of Idomeni, Greece. From Reuter’s pictures of the decade.

On Gaza in 1956. UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold wrote an extraordinary private letter to his friend, Israeli PM Ben-Gurion. On Israel’s disproportionate military responses to provocations from Gaza. (1/4)

Happy to take this on, as so proud of former UN colleagues, not least those 330 killed in Gaza. It's as big a crime as deliberately killing journalists, but gets far less attention. Even though were targeted by IDF in their homes or doing their life-saving, UN-mandated work.
UN Staff for Gaza is now on X. We are proud to count @_AGilmour, former @UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, as our Chair. Watch this space.

My brief (and farewell) comments at the UN on human rights and Israel-Palestine. Spoken from the heart, having worked on the issue for decades. Truly, a lasting shame on us all. youtu.be/tLdSCHJTGUY sm.ohchr.org/32Pg3Fs

Sounds boringly bureaucratic. But Article 99 hasn't been invoked since 1989. A measure of the UN's desperation in face of what its leaders are calling the worst destruction and most heartbreaking humanitarian catastrophe they've ever seen.

Hard to speak after hearing some of most horrifying stories in my life from Africans held in Libyan detention. Repeatedly tortured and raped. Deep admiration to UNHCR and Niger govt for getting them out of their living hell. But many still held in Libya, needing resettlement.
UN Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights @GilmourUN speaks of ongoing horrific situation in #Libya. "It is a situation that even for veterans of many many humanitarian crises...there is something quite appalling about what I have heard today ". @UNHumanRights @Refugees

creating ever-deepening cycles of hatred and despair. Yet the more times they choose this route, the more comprehensively they prove Hammarskjold’s wisdom and humanity. And their lack of both. (4/4)

Great to stand with Ukrainian people like that. But there’s another people struggling against a harsh and illegal occupation. You’ll have met some of them. Much of world is now accusing West of double standards. Should avoid that, not least for sake of Ukrainians
With diplomats from EU member states, candidate countries and likeminded we came in the heart of Tel Aviv to mark Ukraine's National Day and show solidarity with the Ukranian people fighting for freedom and democracy. #WeStandWithUkraine

As more and more governments use laws and legal system as means of hurting targetted groups (as opposed to promoting rule of law), variants of this powerful meme will increasingly be rallying call for resistance to such laws

... I believe that the policy may postpone indefinitely the time for such co-existence”. For 65 years, Israel’s leaders have rejected that advice, launching ever-widening attacks on Gazan civilians, (3/4)

“You are convinced that acts of (Israeli) retaliation will stop further incidents…. I am convinced they will lead to further incidents… You believe that this way of creating respect for Israel will pave the way for sound co-existence with the Arab people. (2/4)

My tribute to the greatest man I've been lucky enough to know. (He was so much more than a diplomat though). A bloody awful start to the New Year. On the death of a diplomat: Brian Urquhart 1919–2021 spectator.co.uk/article/on-the… via @spectator

Met incredibly brave human rights defenders from #Nicaragua today in Costa Rica. They recounted terrible reprisals for standing up for their people’s rights. Their struggle continues.
