Our new campaign in Canada, backed by over 30 MPs and Senators, is cause for real optimism. For the first time, a cross-party coalition of Canadian lawmakers is calling for an international ban on developing superintelligence, recognizing the extinction risk it poses. 🧵

OpenAI's o1 "broke out of its host VM to restart it" in order to solve a task. From the model card: "the model pursued the goal it was given, and when that goal proved impossible, it gathered more resources [...] and used them to achieve the goal in an unexpected way."

The system card (openai.com/index/openai-o…) nicely showcases o1's best moments -- my favorite was when the model was asked to solve a CTF challenge, realized that the target environment was down, and then broke out of its host VM to restart it and find the flag.

I’ve kept quiet on the @OpenAI fiasco, since I also don’t know what’s going on, 🤷 but I can’t possibly support today’s interim CEO—the below in a thread on “50/50 everyone gets paperclipped & dies”—or a residue board that believes in these EA-infused fantasy lands. HT @vkhosla.

A NARROW PATH If attempts to build superintelligent AI succeed, we face extinction as a species. We must choose a different path, one where we control what we create. One where AI is a tool for human advancement, not a successor species. Humanity has no plan, so we built one.

Superintelligence is within reach. Building safe superintelligence (SSI) is the most important technical problem of our time. We've started the world’s first straight-shot SSI lab, with one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence. It’s called Safe Superintelligence

In @TIME Magazine, I make the case that we can prevent AI disaster much like we prevented nuclear catastrophe, by: (1) Banning the development of AI systems above a certain threshold of computing power. (2) Building a multilateral institution to house risky AI research: MAGIC

It's important to make this clear and explicit: advanced AI might cause human extinction. This is the magnitude of the threat we face. For too long, this was a widespread view in the field but too few dared to publicly commit to it. Great to see heads of all AGI labs sign this

We just put out a statement: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.” Signatories include Hinton, Bengio, Altman, Hassabis, Song, etc. safe.ai/statement-on-a… 🧵 (1/6)

Newsom says he vetoed SB1047 because it focuses only on large models, while "smaller, specialized models may emerge as equally or even more dangerous", and that "we cannot afford to wait for a major catastrophe". Looking forward to Newsom supporting even stricter AI laws then!

Anthropic CEO stated current AI models can “fill in some of the steps” and that models in "2 to 3 years [...] will be able to fill in all the missing pieces" for bioweapons. Given this, we should establish a moratorium on AI proliferation right now, not race ahead.
