Recently got into the Japanese doll comm and learned that there's two types of collectors: wet and dry. Dry doll lovers are those who treat their dolls purely as objects, while wet doll lovers are those who interact with their dolls as if they're people and talk to them like so.

i don't think people are ready to hear japancore is a real thing in japan and it is one of the biggest fashion trends there rn and it is also essentially just the brilliant green era tomoko kawase.

do yall remember the edgelord clothes you wanted to wear as a kid? striped shirts, random cross/skull prints with words that don't actually mean anything, bondage pants, useless belts. In japan, this style is called "dasapunk" (ダサパンク), which basically means "cringe punk" lol

speaking of, there was actually (and still is) a chunk of lolitas who liked to go to risque fetish/hardcore events like salon de succubus and torture garden, esp in the 2000s. Not just gothic or ero lolitas either but also straight up (oldschool) sweet and classic lolitas too

something i also notice in general when cishet guys specifically consume and analyze media that depicts women's experiences is the concerning amount of shit they somehow miss unless it is spelled out in the description. esp when it comes to psychological shit

Despite lolita history summaries mentioning "doll style" being a coexisting/predecessor style to lolita, I've never seen it in a magazine before. But recently, I found a doll-kei mention in KERA vol. 4 attributed to the style worn by fashion student Kumi Saito in 1997-1998.

American Lolita or "amerori" feature in Alice Deco A La Mode Vol. 4, 2010. They cite Candy Candy as a fictional inspiration but considering the era I also believe this style concept was influenced by the western-inspired vintage girly fashion popularized by Kana Nishino/Kanayan.

thinking about that one section in the japanese wikipedia page for gothic lolita that said "while otakus like huge bazongas, gothic lolitas prefer twinks and sometimes yaoi" why did they say that.

OH I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT LOLITA'S CONNECTION WITH FETISH SCENES FOR SO LONG, there's a few factors in play: first is the rise of underground club events catering to more "hard goth" tastes in 2000s Japan, kickstarted by the opening of Tokyo Goth & Darkwave by AUTO-MOD's GENET.

there's a spectrum from dry lovers who treat dolls like purely aesthetic objects, dry lovers who assign specific characters to their dolls, wet lovers who treat their dolls like people but still think they're just dolls, and wet lovers who believe their dolls have real souls.
