Just sent a big batch of TestFlight invites for Halo. We're adding the paywall in two weeks. Everyone who helps us test before then will get grandfathered in for 1 year free. Reply here for an invite!
2025 letter: The future of @matter
There are years that ask questions, and years that answer. For us, last year was both.
Rob and I founded Matter together in 2020. In 2022, we became fathers, only three weeks apart.
Then, last year, we were both diagnosed with cancer.
I had
Cat's out of the bag ◡̈ Over the past six months, we've been quietly working on a second app!
Halo is a habits app for iOS with a companion AI habits coach (think: "James Clear in your pocket"*).
We just started beta testing and are hustling to get into the app store ASAP,
breaking news to you (I have not been authorized to share this 😬) the team that built @matter is cooking on a habit-building app that is designed with incredible product intuition and DOES NOT fail.
this ai coach just texts you - perfectly integrated with the ios app
Someday I will tell the story of how Patrick generously met me for a drink as a birthday present organized by my girlfriend (epically responding to her cold email in 5 minutes on a holiday weekend) and gave me the best advice on what was to become Matter. They say never meet your
NYT is doing a disservice by not preparing the public to understand what’s happening and what’s coming.
The awareness gap between people who are paying attention (via a very particular info diet, heavy on X) vs. not is *stunning*, and not a good thing.

I spoke to / heard from a few senior AI labs people this weekend and I now feel even more confident in these predictions from a month ago.
Hearing these same ideas come out of their mouths was quite strange in how real it became. There is a sequence of future events that if you
I keep thinking about how genius PlasticList is as a leverage point.
You can imagine all sorts of alternative projects – start a plastic-free CPG, fund scientists studying EDCs, produce “An Inconvenient Truth” for microplastics, etc.

I am happy to
A super talented designer I know was thinking about his next chapter. He lives in Michigan, doesn't have a big online presence or lots of SF/SV connections.
I intro'd him to @soleio. Within a day, he had interviews at OpenAI, Sierra, Perplexity, the list goes on.
Moral of the
End of an era.
Bit of personal history... Before starting Matter, Pocket was my favorite app. It wasn’t just the app I spent the most time in, Pocket was part of my identity. I was proud of my Top 1% status, as I'm sure many Pocket OGs can relate to.
In 2015, I actually

Also, law of unintended consequences… many people don’t check organ donor today because of fears doctors won’t fight if they’re borderline. Imagine how few would opt in if definition was “broadened” (whatever tf that means).
It's just crazy what Substack has done. What started as "Mailchimp + Stripe", at a time when social media had already killed off so much journalism, has today completely redrawn the map of elite discourse, spawned major media companies (eg Free Press), minted dozens of journalist
We’ve raised $100 million that we will put to work for creators and their audiences. Ownership for creators. Agency for audiences. Substack is a network built in service of people who care about culture. I’m pumped for this.
Now we go big.
