As for what’s next for me, I’m going to get back to writing with, what else, a personal newsletter (I know), focused on the the rebooting of media. (First one, after a couple weeks break, will be lessons learned at Digiday)

I’m fascinated by Twitter applying “community notes” to ads. It’s a legitimately bold move that I originally assumed was oversight but is clearly not and is truly novel.

I’ve become a Newark airport truther. It’s quicker to downtown Manhattan than JFK and infinitely calmer.

CMO: we are using data to connect with our consumers on a more human level. Moderator: give an example of that. CMO: oh, wow. Well, um, I mean, we just have a lot of.... data.

Some news: At the end of the month, I’m leaving Digiday after nearly a decade. I’m proud we built a global brand based on honesty with a sustainable business — and expanded into new areas with Glossy and Modern Retail. Digiday is a great company with great people.

Saw a woman order a coffee, sit down and drink it while just thinking. No phone, no laptop, not even a magazine. Very unsettling.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid people who say "work hard, play hard."

Airlines should start quiet flights to Europe, optimized completely for sleep. Leave at 9pm, no meal or drinks service or bustling of any sorts. All dark until 15 minutes before landing.

Most common publisher lies: 1. We were never dependent on Facebook 2. We'll license our software 3. We never pivoted to video 4. We're premium 5. Our brand is strong enough that people will pay 6. We don't buy traffic 7. We put the user experience first 8. We don't have silos

One of my favorite publisher stories about Apple News. Publisher had very big ad deal but Apple refused to allow the tracking the advertiser required, killing the deal. The advertiser: Apple.
