Milton is the only category 5 hurricane in Atlantic records (HURDATv2, 1851-present) to have any sort of a southeasterly motion vector:

Using 5-minute ASOS data nationally, I constructed a loop of 10-minute pressure change, showing the shockwave from the volcanic eruption progressing through the United States this morning:

Remember the shockwave from the volcanic eruption that propagated eastward through the US yesterday morning? The opposite end of the shockwave that propagated westward from the volcano made it through the US last night, and was more pronounced than the first in the eastern US!

The strong cold front ushering in one of the worst December cold outbreaks in modern records finally cleared most of the East Coast, completing a 2-day trek that started with an extreme 40°F drop in 30min in Cheyenne, WY. Here's the front viewed from hourly temperature change:

Just to emphasize how poorly hurricane & global models performed for Hurricane Otis... here's the intensity forecasts initialized 24 hours ago, with the dotted black line showing verification:

Now that one-minute ASOS station data is available for the US for Monday's solar eclipse, here's a loop of the 30-minute temperature change from the eclipse. Even locations far from totality experienced a pronounced drop in temperatures due to the decreased solar radiation!

It's no exaggeration to say today brought a truly historical weather event to the Gulf Coast - lots of places all the way down to the water got over 6-8 inches of snow, shattering records going as far back as 1895 in some places. Let's review what caused this historic event 🧵

Unfortunately, we have yet another addition to the extensive list of major hurricanes making landfall in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast since 2017 -- with all but two of them category 4+ landfalls.

6 days of Hurricane Dorian as seen from radar. From category 5 hurricane ➡️ stalling over the Bahamas for almost 2 days ➡️ more than doubling in size ➡️ making landfall in North Carolina ➡️ transitioning to a powerful post-tropical cyclone over Canada.

One last animation of the cold air outbreak, visualized from equivalent potential temperature (theta-e). The cold front finally cleared the East Coast. Temperatures are currently at or below freezing east of the Rockies except for the southern half of Florida.

Hurricane Ian completed an eyewall replacement cycle, perhaps the most remarkable example of an ERC visible from the US radar network in a few years. Notice how from a storm-centered view, the new eyewall is much larger than the older, spreading impacts over a larger area:
