ER/Trauma/Pediatric ER/ICU nurse. #nursetwitter I say “fuck” a lot, always in good taste. Mostly bad takes on life, but I’m funny sometimes.

Currently working in a pediatric ED. I always hear the nurses say “you’re so brave and strong” before poking. The other day I had to poke a kid and he said, “I’m not brave and I’m not strong.” And fuck did I feel that. Then I looked at him and said, “that’s okay…

Female patient requested to be tested for a yeast infection. Told my doctor and he said, “but she’s not sexually active, Idek what to order.” I said, “she doesn’t have to be sexually active and just order a wet prep.” This is why women in medicine matter.

Highlight of my shift: went to discharge a pt and her mother told me that she was promised a popsicle. I said, "but of course, I've got orange, cherry, and grape." She said, "grape, "her brother said, "orange," and her father said "orange" and then started laughing and told me

that he was only kidding. I left the room and brought back one grape popsicle and two orange popsicles. This dad's face LIT UP and he thanked me with the biggest smile. Working in peds, parents are your patients too and they absolutely deserve compassion and popsicles.

Kids are much more insightful than we give them credit for. This kid, this little love, told me he was neither brave nor strong. I wanted him to know that he doesn’t always have to be. It’s okay to not be brave or strong. And right now, like this child, I don’t feel strong.

…you don’t have to be brave and strong. You’re allowed to be scared and you’re allowed to not want this. I have to do this because it is my job and sometimes having to poke is scary for me too, but I know it’s so you can feel better and I want you feel better.”

A coworker asked me if she could “phone a friend”, I said “sure, what’s up?”. She says, “I have a super anxious teen that needs an IV, would you be willing to go look?”, me: “of course.” I go in, introduce myself, tell her what I’m there to do. She immediately says she doesn’t

There’s nothing like having a nurse from triage hit the staff assist button and run through the doors with a parent sobbing with their child’s limp body in their arms and rushing in to try and save the child’s life. And then actually being able to save that life.

If this patient ever has to come back, she’ll know what options there are for pain control for needle sticks, she’ll know the entire IV/blood draw process, and maybe… juuuust maybe, she won’t have as much fear. That’s always the goal.

bad as she thought it was going to be. Was I super busy with my own patient load last night? Yes, I was. However, I want the hospital experience to be as positive as possible for patients and if that means I am in a room for 45-60 minutes explaining things multiple times to

create understanding, alleviate fear, and potentially help with future hospital visits, I’ll do it every single time. I love spending time with patients and I especially love being able to slow down—even when I’m swamped—and work through fear and anxiety whenever possible.

I've placed IVs in stuffed animals--with consent of course. Afterwards, the mood/vibes/feelings in the room shift to a more positive note. I don't know what it is about IV'd stuffed animals, but I've seen that it helps the kiddos feel less afraid of the experience.

A patient I had toward the end of my shift yesterday morning was still here last night. Found out she missed her prom. Bought her flowers and candy and my lovely child life buddy found me a sash and photo-prop tiara. I walked in and told her we nominated her as ER queen. 🤗

clean and watched her do it. She then told me she was ready. I did every step of the process on her time and got the IV in, the blood drawn, and the ABX started… and GUYS, she fucking rocked it. Afterwards, her mom thanked me (a lot) and the girl told me that it wasn’t as
