We just received an emergency overnight package of #COVID testing supplies from China. Every bit of empty space in the package was stuffed with PPE for us This is a global problem and working together is the only way we are going make it. Thank you to my Chinese counterparts

Message from @UChicago to recently tenured faculty: Now that you are tenured you might feel the urge to keep doing what made you successful. Fight it. We want you to feel safe to fail. Fail often. Use your tenure to make a difference. Inspiring & beautiful. A true university.

Our lab tradition is that when someone leaves the group, an instrument is named in their honor. Today we had a special ceremony for Dr. Julia Zinkus-Boltz, our first graduate student. It is a somber and serious occasion.

My incredible @UChiChemistry colleague Chuan He (not on twitter) found a way to perturb RNA regulatory pathways to make essentially ANY plant gigantic! Giant potatoes! More rice! This is a huge deal for world hunger nature.com/articles/s4158…

I am very skeptical of the AI/ML/computational methods to predict protein-protein interactions. Prove me wrong. I present a challenge for anyone who claims they can predict protein-protein interactions. 1/n

Just lost a postdoc applicant due to the simultaneous issues of COVID-19 and visa stress...decided not to stay in the US for postdoc. Totally understandable - and a clear demonstration of how f***ed 2020 is.

To those that did not get @NSFGRFP - I remember when I found out I did not get it. It felt like doors were closed. Well 12 years later I'm a professor at @UChicago w/ a group of 13 amazing grad students and postdocs. Every future is still available to you inspiredby @Gassensmith

In non-science news I’m proud of - I finally finished my new desk. Ive been working on a pile of boxes for 9 months. That motivated me to step up my woodworking hobby - which has also been helpful for coping with 2020! Its all cherry with a design inspired by pergolas.

Excited to share our recent work on CIRTS: “humanized” #RNA -targeting CRISPR/Cas systems. This technology allows us to control gene expression at the RNA level by exploiting RNA regulatory mechanisms (degradation, translation, editing, etc.) cell.com/cell/fulltext/… 1/n

Absolutely amazing. So incredibly proud to be a scientist right now. I hope people get what a big deal this is. Here is my wife - getting a tiny bit of relief - after spending months on the frontline dealing with misery. Proud of her, @pfizer, the whole system. There is hope....

Indeed. If you are applying to grad school in chemistry and want to apply to UChicago (or are mentoring someone in that position) email me just to say "hi" and I'll get them an application fee waiver. No justification needed and no nationality requirement. Also no GRE this year
